Transformers One Review

When you think of Transformers, the first thing that comes to mind is the live-action adaptation of the franchise. However, it seems that for the new generation, that notion is about to change with the release of Transformers One. When this movie was announced, many people were skeptical about it. This skepticism was increased a notch with the first trailer for this movie which turned out to be rather disappointing. Despite this skepticism, the movie turned out to be a huge “what were you saying again?” for all those who doubted its potential, and in this Transformers One review, let me tell you why.

Typically, one of the biggest problems we’ve had with Transformers movies is the overly-packed plot. However, with Transformers One, Paramount recognized this problem and created a plot that works on every level. The plot gives us a perfect sense of the depth of the friendship between Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry).

It also perfectly sets up how Elita One (Scarlett Johansson) and Bumblebee (Keegan-Michael Key) naturally become their allies and brothers in arms, which feels forced somehow. D-16’s transition into Megatron is so perfect and the way Orion Pax transforms into Optimus Prime will literally give you goosebumps.

Even though Transformers One is only 1 hour and 51 minutes long, every minute of this movie feels like it was carefully stitched together like the threads of a precious piece of handmade carpet. The movie works so well that its relatively short runtime will make you feel like you’ve been watching it for hours and could go on for a few more. Overall, the writers of this movie deserve an award for what they’ve managed to do because this kind of thing only happens now and then.

The dubbing brought to life a franchise that was thought to be lost

The overall voice acting of the film by the actors deserved all the appreciation that could be given to it and then some. When I first heard that Chris Hemsworth was going to play the role of Optimus Prime, I’m not going to lie, I was extremely skeptical about it. So, when I walked into the theater, my expectations weren’t exactly high. However, the moment I heard his voice as Prime, I was blown away. Chris Hemsworth does a fantastic job as both Orion Pax and Optimus Prime.

Although he is Orion Pax, his voice is much more relaxed and what you could call slightly laid back. As soon as he gets his ability to transform, you can see a slight change in his demeanor and voice. However, when he receives the Leadership Matrix from Primus, OH MY GOD, that scene in itself is pure poetry and the transition in his voice will turn you into a porcupine with goosebumps.

Not only Chris Hemsworth, but Brian Tyree Henry as D-16/Megatron is as perfect as it gets. The gradual transition from a friendly, personable voice to something that can turn into a nightmare for children deserves a standing ovation. This is also the first time we see Bumblebee speak and the way he was portrayed in the live-action films, in a casual and fun way, is exactly what Brian Tyree Henry brought to the screen with his voice. Elita One, who made her debut in Transformers One, sounds exactly as you would expect from Scarlett Johansson.

Overall, just when people stopped expecting something extraordinary to come out of the Transformers franchise, they hit us with the definition of the word with Transformers One.

The musical score is a breath of fresh air… Forget it, a whole new atmosphere

Overall, I would watch this movie in theaters again anytime, but the only reason I would travel to other countries is to listen to the live orchestra of the Transformers One soundtrack. The live-action Transformers used almost the same soundtrack for all their projects and at some point, it became too repetitive to make me feel what the soundtrack was trying to say.

But with Transformers One, we are given a brand new soundtrack that brings out the intensity of a scene or moment in the film with utmost perfection. The musical numbers in this film use the perfect blend of two different genres, techno and opera. These two genres are not usually supposed to go together, but somehow it works, and it is wonderful, reinforcing the effect of Transformers One.

Transformers One’s animation style is both new and nostalgic

Whoever decided on the animation style for Transformers One deserves the biggest raise possible. I say that because the idea behind the animation is truly brilliant. This movie sticks to the Transformers designs seen in the 1986 Transformers animated series while making it third-dimensional and more detailed. Essentially, they reimagined the OG Transformers from 1986 with the thought of “What if this was made in 2024?”, creating something truly spectacular and an experience in itself.

So, should you watch Transformers One?

Seriously? Is that even a question now? For people who think that animation can never beat live-action, this movie is a huge “misnomer” to them. Transformers One is truly a one-of-a-kind movie that only comes around once in a while. It’s almost ironic that the live-action Transformers series couldn’t give us everything we needed in such a long time, with only one animated movie delivering it all with absolute perfection.

Trust me, I watched the movie trying to find a single flaw in it. Don’t judge me, it’s an occupational hazard, but even after trying, I couldn’t find a single flaw in Transformers One. So if you’re wondering if you should watch it, it’s a massive YES! Book your tickets now, take your friends, family, coworkers, grandparents, or if you can’t find anyone to go with, just get a ticket and make friends with the person sitting next to you, but under no circumstances, do not miss Transformers One. And thankfully, the producers have hinted that a sequel is also possible and I’m hopeful for Transformers Two.
