Ever since the concept of magic was introduced in the MCU, everyone thought they would see Mephisto appear in one of the projects. Initially, fans were convinced that the Marvel villain was responsible for Wanda’s condition in WandaVision. However, the villain turned out to be Agatha, which was an incredible twist, of course but disappointed some fans, especially those who were expecting Mephisto to make an entrance in the MCU.

That being said, Marvel Studios is finally heading in that direction with Agatha All Along, as the villain was mentioned in the latest episode. If you’re wondering who this villain is and what threat he could pose to the heroes, we’ve got you covered.

Mephisto’s Origin in Marvel Comics

Mephisto is believed to have been born before time; thus, his true origin is open only to speculation. However, to summarize, Mephisto was born after the death of Nemesis, the entity that existed before time and created the entire cosmos. Mephisto was born exactly when the Infinity Stones were created.

Mephisto is the ruler of a dark realm that he describes as “Hell.” However, the realm under his rule is not exactly the biblical Hell, nor is Mephisto Satan. Mephisto is believed to be the one who corrupted the minds of Adam and Eve, not because he wanted them to be punished by “God,” but because he wanted to trap their souls in his version of Hell.

Over the years, Mephisto has opposed several Marvel heroes, including Iron Man. It was Mephisto who created the first Ghost Rider by bonding him to the Spirit of Vengeance. It was also Mephisto who made a deal with Norman Osborn, granting him financial success for the soul of his son, Harry. As such, Mephisto has appeared in different eras and encountered almost every Marvel character you could think of.

It is important to note, however, that Mephisto is directly tied to his kingdom and becomes weakened if separated from it for too long. This is why he uses his agents, or demons, to do his bidding.

He grows stronger by trapping more human souls in his realm, and to do this, he preys on emotionally weak and vulnerable humans. However, instead of doing it himself, he uses his agents. Interestingly, we hear a mention of Mephisto’s agents in the latest episode of Agatha All Along.

Mephisto’s Powers and Abilities

Mephisto is a supernatural entity, so he wields immense power. He and his realm feed on the evil in the human world. That’s why he has always acted as fuel for the fire in times of war. He displays supernatural strength, endurance, and speed, making it incredibly difficult for anyone to defeat him. Additionally, Doctor Strange or Wanda’s magic would be meaningless against Mephisto, especially if they were fighting him in his realm.

Not only can he travel between realms, but he also changes physical form. He can appear as a normal investor to manipulate Norman Obsorn or appear as a serpent to corrupt the minds of Adam and Eve. In his real form, Mephisto appears as Satan, but it is difficult to tell if this is his true form.

Mephisto has several demons under his command, and he can summon them at will. He can manipulate matter, create illusions, reverse time, and even change reality.

Mephisto’s Weaknesses

Honestly, Mephisto’s powers are limitless and it is impossible to kill him. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t be defeated. The only way to defeat Mephisto is to keep him away from his kingdom long enough for him to weaken.

It’s also important to note that Mephisto cannot directly harm beings from other realities or dimensions. He cannot go directly to Asgard and fight Thor or Loki. Likewise, he cannot trap someone’s soul in his realm without the person’s will. It’s like in “The Crossroads Accords”, where he needs the person to submit to his demands to trap their soul in Hell for eternity.

For example, Mephisto would have been unable to do anything if Norman Osborn had rejected his demands and refused to exchange his son’s soul. This is why hatred, jealousy, revenge, or greed are Mephisto’s best tools. He uses these human feelings to manipulate someone and exchange their soul for someone he desires.
